Bread:
- 1 pound frozen bread dough, thawed
- 1 egg white
- 2 tablespoons water
Meat Mixture:
- 1 pound beef stew meat, well trimmed
- 10 ounces beef broth
- 3/4 cup burgundy wine
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced thin
DIRECTIONS
Make Bread
You may purchase crusty bread or buns. Otherwise, if you choose to make the bread, form thawed bread dough into four small round loaves. Place them on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Cover and put in a warm place, allowing to rise until double in bulk, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Mix egg white and water. Brush tops of loaves with egg white and water. Bake for 15 minutes, until browned.
Cook Mixture
In a small mixing bowl, combine flour and bread crumbs and set aside. Slice mushrooms and onion and place them in a crockpot. Add meat, wine, broth, salt and pepper to crockpot. Blend. Stir in flour and bread crumb mixture into meat and cover. Cook mixture in crockpot for 6 hours on high, until mixture is thick.
When mixture is done, serve on crusty bread or buns by using a sharp knife to cut a hole in the top of the bread. Serve meat mixture in the bread. Eat scooped out bread on the side.
